The man and woman who allegedly blackmailed national soccer player Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham Hotspur) will stand trial while in custody.

On June 10th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office Criminal Division 3 (Chief Prosecutor Choi Soon-ho) indicted Ms. Yang, a woman in her 20s, on charges of extortion and attempted extortion. Her accomplice, Mr. Yong, a man in his 40s, was also sent to trial.

Yang is accused of extorting 300 million won from Son Heung-min last June. She reportedly threatened him by sending a fetal ultrasound image and threatening to expose a false pregnancy to the public.

Prior to contacting Son Heung-min, she had attempted to demand money from another man using a false pregnancy claim. When that yielded no response, she contacted Son Heung-min, claiming to be pregnant with his child.

Yang allegedly squandered the money on luxury goods. Facing financial hardship again, she planned a second crime. In March, Yang conspired with Yong, who had become her boyfriend, to attempt further blackmail, though this attempt was unsuccessful.

Initially, the case was believed to be Yong's sole crime, but during the police investigation, evidence of collusion between the two was discovered. They allegedly coordinated their actions while demanding 70 million won from the victim.

Prosecutors later secured concrete evidence. They re-forensically examined mobile phones obtained through additional search and seizure warrants and confirmed bank account activity and call records. Based on this evidence, Yang was indicted on charges of attempted extortion.

The prosecution has expressed a strong commitment to resolving this case. "We will do our utmost to maintain the prosecution so that the defendants receive sentences commensurate with their crimes," they pledged.
