'High Five' Surpasses 1 Million Admissions: "Harmless Comedy Proves a Hit"
Actors Namkoong Min and Jeon Yeo-bin have united for an authentic melodrama. But this is no ordinary tale; it sheds the typical frameworks of overt pathos and narrative-driven plots, instead brimming with sophisticated, modern storytelling.
The lead actors' seasoned acting prowess promises to amplify immersion. Director Lee Jung-heum confidently stated, "It's a drama without flowery language," suggesting that the focus will be solely on the actors' emotions, rather than elaborate direction or camera work.
Namkoong Min's reunion with SBS is also drawing attention. This combination has already proven to be a box office guarantee with 'Stove League' (2019) and 'One Dollar Lawyer' (2022).
"I've returned to SBS after three years. I read up to episode 11 of the script in advance. It turned out as well as I'd hoped. I'm confident. Please look forward to it!" (Namkoong Min)
SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Our Movie' (written by Han Ga-eun and Kang Kyung-min, directed by Lee Jung-heum) held its production presentation on June 10th at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul. Director Lee, Namkoong Min, Jeon Yeo-bin, Lee Seol, and Seo Hyun-woo attended.
Drama Premise and Star Power
'Our Movie' is a classic melodrama, portraying the poignant romance between Lee Je-ha (played by Namkoong Min), a film director struggling with his next project, and Lee Da-eum (played by Jeon Yeo-bin), a rookie actress with a terminal illness. Their love story unfolds as they work together on a film.
Namkoong Min portrays Lee Je-ha, a talented director whose debut film garnered much attention. However, he remains overshadowed by his father, a legendary film director, hindering his ability to embark on subsequent projects. He eventually takes on a remake of his father's masterpiece, 'White Love.'
Namkoong Min decided to join the project just two days after receiving the script. He explained his choice, saying, "When choosing a project, I value my 'gut feeling.' The script was so entertaining that I was drawn to it. I also had faith that Director Lee Jung-heum would guide the project well."
As a veteran with 27 years in the industry, Namkoong Min has worked with numerous directors. Furthermore, he has experience directing short films, which eased his transformation into a film director for this role. Instead, he focused intensely on emotional expression.
Namkoong Min revealed, "I remember the director told me, 'A melodrama protagonist should be even more handsome,' so I came more dressed up. Rather than preparing as a director, I prepared more as a man deeply in love with a woman."
Characters and On-Set Chemistry
Jeon Yeo-bin takes on the role of Lee Da-eum, a patient who has been battling a terminal illness for five years. Even on the cusp of her life's end, she auditions to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress and is cast as the lead in the film 'White Love.'
Jeon Yeo-bin was drawn to Lee Da-eum's bright disposition. "I thought of her as a sunshine-like character," she shared. "I wanted to live as such a person, which led me to this project. In fact, during the 7-8 months of filming, my heart became healthier."
She focused on portraying vitality rather than the gloom of a terminal illness. "Da-eum received a terminal diagnosis due to a genetic disease. She is already clearly aware of life's finiteness," she explained. "That's why she lives more powerfully and faithfully than anyone else."
In the drama, Lee Da-eum displays a subtle rivalry with top star Chae Seo-young (played by Lee Seol), who joins the film as a supporting actress. Chae Seo-young rose to stardom through director Lee Je-ha's previous work and competes with Lee Da-eum for his affection.
Despite the on-screen tension, the set atmosphere was amicable. Jeon Yeo-bin said, "Lee Seol is an actress I truly wanted to meet." Lee Seol expressed gratitude, stating, "Yeo-bin unnie always embraced me and taught me so much without reservation. She was truly someone from whom I could learn a great deal."
Romance and Future Collaborations
A key viewing point is the romantic chemistry between Namkoong Min and Jeon Yeo-bin. Their love for each other didn't feel forced; they naturally blended into each other before or during the filming process.
While reading the script, Jeon Yeo-bin already envisioned Namkoong Min in the role of Lee Je-ha. She shyly admitted, "Imagining the gaze of Je-ha as played by senior (Namkoong Min) made my heart flutter. I really wanted to see that with my own eyes."
She continued, "Senior is someone who has received Daesang awards from all three major terrestrial broadcasters, isn't he? My deep respect for him naturally led to feelings of affection. I think he found that endearing."
Namkoong Min praised Jeon Yeo-bin, saying, "There were many instances where Jeon Yeo-bin worked surprisingly hard on set. I was able to receive a lot of good energy. She's a friend who has become a turning point in my acting career."
The two have already agreed to collaborate on other projects. Namkoong Min expressed his desire to cast Jeon Yeo-bin if he were to direct another film. Jeon Yeo-bin smiled, responding, "I told him, 'I'll always be working hard.'"
Final Remarks and Broadcast Details
Finally, Jeon Yeo-bin exclaimed, "This drama will deeply moisten the hearts of viewers. It also has a clean taste, like Pyeongyang Naengmyeon. Since summer is the season for Pyeongyang Naengmyeon, please enjoy the drama!"
Namkoong Min urged, "The drama's quality is so high that I'm proud to have appeared in it. You absolutely shouldn't judge it after just the first episode. Please watch until at least episode 4."
Meanwhile, 'Our Movie' will premiere on June 13th at 9:50 PM KST.
