BIFF Announces Official Lineup and Competition Titles
Organizers for the Busan International Film Festival have released the official lineup for the upcoming edition.
The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) runs from October 6 through 15 across venues centered around the Busan Cinema Center. Over the course of the festival, 315 total titles will meet audiences in theaters.
Fourteen feature selections representing regional cinema will compete within the Asian Competition category. Marking its second year since launching last season, participating entries will vie for the prestigious Busan Award Grand Prize.
The competitive section brings together international productions spanning South Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, and France.
Three domestic features secured competition spots. The local slate includes director Lim Ha-yeon's Tae-ju of That Day, director Kim Jeong-hoon's Shave, and director Yeom Gyu-bok's animated feature A Long Long Night.
Among these, Tae-ju of That Day marks Lim's feature directorial debut, following a woman who flees to a coastal resort due to rumors before encountering a fortune teller.
Shave serves as Kim's return to horror-thriller filmmaking roughly 13 years after Tinker Ticker. The picture stars Roh Jeong-eui, Sho Kasamatsu, Byun Yo-han, and ITZY's Ryujin.
A Long Long Night adapts the bestselling book into a 3D animated project, tracing a journey to the ocean shared by a white rhino and a young penguin.
Legendary Auteurs and Diverse Domestic Premieres
Prominent international masters will also present new creative works through the festival's flagship Icons section. The category features 35 projects, including Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love alongside Hong Sang-soo's No Place to Look.
The programming additionally spotlights artistic breadth within domestic cinema.
Furthermore, screenings include Cristian Mungiu's Palme d'Or-winning Fjord and Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Cannes Best Actress winner Suddenly Worsened.
Director Kim Jong-kwan's Day and Night for Each Other opens the festival as its official inaugural feature. Actor Kim Min-ha will solo host the opening ceremony. In South Korea's film ecosystem, BIFF serves as the primary gateway for regional features to gain global distribution leverage.
