'The Odyssey' Surpasses 12M Viewers in South Korea

The feature film 'The Odyssey', directed by Christopher Nolan, has officially crossed the 12 million moviegoers threshold in South Korea.

According to data released by the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for movie theater tickets, the cinematic project drew an audience of 46,945 viewers on October 5. This newly reported daily attendance brings the total cumulative audience size to 1,204,515 moviegoers across the country.

With this substantial benchmark, the title has secured the 21st position on the all-time domestic Korean box office chart based on total viewer volume. In reaching this rank, the production successfully surpassed major historical hit releases, including the classic war drama 'TaeGukGi: Brotherhood of War', which recorded 11.74 million admissions, as well as the recent occult thriller 'Exhuma', which previously registered 11.91 million viewers.

When looking exclusively at international foreign releases distributed within the South Korean market, the feature now holds a place in the top five highest-grossing foreign titles of all time. The production currently trails the third-ranking foreign release, 'Avatar', which amassed 13.62 million viewers, by a gap of approximately 1.6 million moviegoers. Furthermore, it remains separated from the fourth-place foreign hit, 'Aladdin'—which logged 12.55 million viewers—by an approximate margin of 500,000 ticket sales.

This project marks director Christopher Nolan's second feature film to achieve the prestigious ten-million-viewer milestone in the South Korean market. Following its initial theatrical release on August 5, the production accomplished the ten-million-viewer threshold within just 33 days of hitting local theaters.

The title continues to demonstrate impressive long-term box office performance. Despite more than two months having elapsed since its initial theatrical premiere, the work consistently draws steady crowds to cinema auditoriums. As of 3:00 PM on October 6, the release maintained a solid presence by holding the number two spot in real-time advance ticket reservation rates, accounting for 14.9% of all booked tickets.

Meanwhile, the narrative of 'The Odyssey' chronicles the grueling journey of Odysseus, portrayed by actor Matt Damon, a celebrated legendary hero of the Trojan War who navigates severe hardships, trials, and perilous obstacles as he fights to return to his home kingdom.
