The film Eojeolsuga Eopda (literally, "There's No Other Way"), directed by Park Chan-wook, has put a stop to the box office dominance of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated movie ticket network, Eojeolsuga Eopda rose to the number one spot in pre-sale reservations as of 4 PM on September 8th, claiming 29.7% of the market share with 110,787 tickets sold.
This is an unusual success, as the film achieved the top pre-sale position 17 days before its release, a full week faster than the record set by blockbusters like 12.12: The Day and The Roundup: Punishment, which topped charts 10 days before their premieres. The film's surge has effectively halted the momentum of the Japanese animated film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Castle Arc, which has seen its reservation numbers drop significantly with the new film's impending release.
The film follows a salaried man who, after being suddenly laid off, begins a personal war of re-employment to protect his wife, children, and the home he worked so hard to buy.
The movie's prestige is bolstered by its journey through top international festivals. It was selected for the competitive section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it earned critical acclaim and was widely predicted to win the Golden Lion, though it ultimately did not. Following Venice, the film is set to head to the Toronto and New York film festivals. It will also be the opening film for the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
Eojeolsuga Eopda will be released in theaters on September 24th.
