EXO's Kai Donates ₩50 Million to Help Wildfire Victims in Korea
Bong Joon-ho's Mickey 17 is wrapping up its theatrical run just one month after its premiere — after falling short of breaking even. The film is now shifting to global streaming platforms.
🎬 Underwhelming Box Office Numbers Worldwide
Released on March 7 in North America, Mickey 17 opened in 3,807 theaters and earned $19 million (approx. ₩27.9 billion) on its first day. However, it only managed to pull in $45.2 million (₩66.4 billion) in its first month.
Europe, Middle East & Africa: $31.29 million (₩45.9 billion)
UK: $8.49M (₩12.4B), France: $7.91M (₩11.6B), Germany: $4.27M (₩6.2B)
Asia: $29.6 million (₩43.4 billion), including
Korea: 2.99 million admissions and ₩29.6 billion in revenue
Despite global interest, the film struggled to meet expectations.
💸 Production Costs and Estimated Losses
With a reported production budget of $118 million (₩170 billion) and an additional $80 million (₩117 billion) spent on marketing by Warner Bros., the film needed to gross approximately $300 million (₩440.8 billion) to break even.
However, global box office revenues amounted to only $143 million (₩209 billion) — resulting in estimated losses of up to $80 million (₩117 billion), according to Variety.
"While digital streaming sales may offset some of the damage, it's unlikely the film will turn a full profit," the outlet noted.
🛸 Streaming Release Starts April 7
Mickey 17 will be available for streaming starting April 7 across platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango, and Max. In South Korea, the film will also be accessible via VOD services.
🧬 Bong Joon-ho's Sci-Fi Ambition
Starring Robert Pattinson, Mickey 17 tells the story of a disposable clone repeatedly sent on deadly missions during the colonization of a distant planet. It marks Bong Joon-ho's return following his Oscar-winning masterpiece Parasite.
However, the reception fell short of expectations:
Rotten Tomatoes: 77% (critics), 73% (audience)
Parasite scored: 99% (critics), 95% (audience)
