The film 'The World's Owner' (directed by Yoon Ga-eun) has officially secured distribution in China.
Barunson E&A announced on the 20th, "'The World's Owner' has finalized a Chinese distributor, despite the frozen status of Korean film exports to China since the Hallyu ban (or Hanhan-ryeong)."
The local distributor is Light Film Limited, a company whose lineup includes films such as Bong Joon-ho's 'Parasite' and Hirokazu Kore-eda's 'Nobody Knows.'
This success is attributed to the positive audience response during a Chinese film festival. Light Film Limited stated, "We want to introduce this film to Chinese theaters so that more viewers can experience it firsthand."
Importing foreign films into China is essentially subject to government approval. The possibility of an easing of the Hallyu ban was previously raised when director Bong Joon-ho's 'Mickey 17' was approved for release in China.
'The World's Owner' is Director Yoon's first new work in six years. It tells the story of a high school girl who is the sole person to refuse to sign a petition and subsequently begins receiving mysterious notes.
Even before its theatrical release, the film received invitations from prestigious international film festivals. It was the first and only Korean film invited to the competitive Platform section of the 50th Toronto International Film Festival.
It also secured two awards at the 9th Pingyao International Film Festival in China and will be featured at the 41st Warsaw International Film Festival, the 69th BFI London Film Festival, and the 49th São Paulo International Film Festival.
Meanwhile, 'The World's Owner' is scheduled to premiere in South Korea on October 22nd.
