The management agency representing actor Ji Chang-wook has issued an official statement addressing the recent controversy surrounding a multi-billion won tax penalty levied against him.
"We deeply apologize for causing concern to many over this matter," his agency, Spring Company, stated on June 2. "However, we firmly clarify that there was absolutely no intentional omission of income or fraudulent tax evasion involved."
The agency emphasized that the financial penalty was not the result of malicious tax fraud. "There was a difference in interpretation between our team and the tax authorities regarding whether the revenues generated from the actor's entertainment activities should be attributed to him as an individual or to the corporate entity under the principle of substance over taxation," the agency explained.
Spring Company further asserted the actor's history of financial compliance: "Since his debut in 2008, Ji Chang-wook has strictly adhered to all relevant tax laws and procedures without a single tax-related issue, always prioritizing the faithful fulfillment of his tax duties."
The agency confirmed that they intend to comply fully with the National Tax Service’s (NTS) final ruling. "We deeply respect the decision made by the National Tax Service and will pay the assessed additional taxes without delay, in accordance with standard legal procedures," they stated.
Closing the statement, the agency added, "Moving forward, we will review our tax and accounting management systems with even greater scrutiny. We remain committed to upholding the law and principles to ensure transparent tax compliance."
Earlier today, a domestic media outlet reported that the 2nd Investigation Bureau of the Seoul Regional Tax Office had launched an irregular (special) tax audit targeting Ji Chang-wook, which reportedly culminated in a penalty of several billion won in back taxes.
