 Entertainment Executive Appears in Court Following Expanded Financial Probe

Cha Ga Won, chairwoman of the South Korean music label and entertainment group One Hundred, attended a detention warrant review at the Seoul Central District Court on Monday to address major fraud allegations.

The hearing, presided over by Senior Judge Bu Dong Sik, lasted 165 minutes from 10:00 AM to 12:45 PM local time. Cha exited the courthouse with a somber expression, refusing to answer reporters' questions regarding the charges before boarding a police transport vehicle.

Upon her initial arrival at the courthouse at 9:27 AM, Cha briefly stated she would "faithfully answer the court's questions." However, she remained silent when asked why proposed business projects were never executed after receiving substantial financial advances.

Detailed Allegations: Unfulfilled IP Deals and Housing Contracts

Cha faces severe charges under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, primarily centered on fraud involving intellectual property (IP) licensing.

According to investigative authorities, Cha allegedly secured 24.2 billion KRW (approximately $17.6 million USD) in advance payments from media platform company Fromm (operated by Wonderwall/Knowmadx) by proposing joint business ventures utilizing her agency's artist IP. Investigative reports indicate that these promised initiatives were never executed.

In addition to the corporate fraud charge, Cha is under investigation for a separate personal financial dispute involving real estate. She is accused of receiving 5.4 billion KRW (approximately $3.9 million USD) from an acquaintance under the premise of executing cross-lease housing contracts that were subsequently unfulfilled.

In South Korea, severe financial crimes exceeding 5 billion KRW fall under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, which carries heightened legal penalties including potential life imprisonment depending on the extent of damages.

Multiple Warrant Requests and Next Procedural Steps

The current court appearance follows an extensive back-and-forth between law enforcement agencies. Prosecutor offices had previously rejected two prior arrest warrant applications submitted by the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, requesting supplemental investigations.

The third warrant application was submitted following joint consultations between police and prosecutors. Investigators secured additional evidence after conducting bank account tracking and detailed analyses of contract agreements between the involved corporate entities.

Cha is currently waiting at a temporary detention facility while the court reviews the evidence presented during the hearing. A decision on whether to issue the formal arrest warrant is expected as early as late Monday evening.
