Kim Ho-joong has been transferred from the Seoul Detention Center to Somang Prison.
Kim Ho-joong was admitted to Somang Prison, located in Buknae-myeon, Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, on August 18th. He had been held at the Seoul Detention Center until recently.
Somang Prison is the only private correctional facility in South Korea, opened in December 2010. It is operated on a non-profit basis by the Christian foundation 'Agape' under a government commission.
Strict Admission Requirements
The prison has strict admission regulations. To be eligible, a male inmate must have a sentence of seven years or less with at least one year remaining. Individuals with more than two prior convictions and those convicted of drug-related offenses, public security crimes, or organized crime are excluded.
Kim Ho-joong, who is known to be a Christian, applied for a transfer to Somang Prison at the suggestion of people around him and received approval from the Ministry of Justice.
He was arrested and indicted on May 9th of last year for causing a drunk driving accident on a road in Gangnam, Seoul. He was charged with colliding with an oncoming taxi and fleeing the scene before having his manager turn himself in as a substitute.
In April, he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison in the second trial. He initially appealed the verdict but withdrew the appeal in May. Kim Ho-joong is expected to be released in November of next year.
