MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama, Grand Princess of the 21st Century (hereafter Grand Princess), is proving to be an unstoppable force, dominating both domestic ratings and global streaming charts.
Immediately following its release on April 11, Grand Princess soared to No. 1 on Disney+ Korea’s Top 10. By April 13, it reached No. 4 on the Disney+ Global Top 10 TV Shows chart (via FlixPatrol), claiming the top spot in markets including Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. The series also made a strong impact in the West, ranking 2nd in Brazil, 4th in Mexico, and breaking into the Top 10 in 44 countries, including Canada, Australia, and the United States.
Ratings and Domestic Buzz
The drama’s domestic performance is equally impressive. According to Nielsen Korea, the premiere recorded a 7.8% nationwide rating, while the second episode surged to 9.5%, peaking at 11.1%. It comfortably secured the No. 1 spot in its time slot.
The show has also swept "buzzworthiness" rankings. According to Good Data Corporation’s FunDex report for the first two weeks of April, Grand Princess ranked No. 1 across TV-OTT dramas, leading in community reactions (VON), social media engagement, and news coverage.
A Winning Formula: Alternate Reality and Top-Tier Casting
Grand Princess leans heavily into beloved K-drama tropes, reimagining modern-day South Korea as a fictional constitutional monarchy. The high production value and stunning visuals provide a lush backdrop for the "invincible" pairing of IU and Byeon Woo-seok.
Byeon Woo-seok, fresh off the "Sun-jae Syndrome" from Lovely Runner, seems poised to ignite another global craze. Meanwhile, IU reinforces her status as a "guaranteed box-office hit," bringing both veteran acting skills and undeniable star power to the screen.
Critical Reception: Visuals vs. Character Depth
Despite the overwhelming popularity, some critics and viewers have pointed out a few narrative hurdles—specifically, a sense of "setting overkill."
The Conflict Gap: The character of Sung Hee-joo (IU) is presented with a complex regarding her status as an illegitimate child of a chaebol family. However, as she appears to lack for nothing and openly challenges her legitimate brother, some find her "deprivation" difficult to empathize with.
Style Over Substance?: Prince Lee An (Byeon Woo-seok) is the quintessential "perfect man." However, the first week focused heavily on stylized shower and fitness scenes to highlight Byeon’s physique, leaving less room for the nuanced psychological expression fans expected from the actor.
The production will need to balance these aesthetic flourishes with deeper emotional development as the story progresses. Episode 3 of Grand Princess is scheduled to air on April 16.
