Online bookseller YES24 has issued an apology and announced a detailed compensation plan a week after suffering a major hacking incident.
On June 16th, YES24 stated on its official website, "We sincerely apologize to everyone who experienced inconvenience due to the service disruption. We have prepared compensation plans for each service to alleviate some of the difficulties."
YES24's services were paralyzed around 4 AM on June 9th due to a ransomware attack. Approximately five days later, on June 13th, services for book, album, DVD, and stationery purchases were restored. However, some services remain affected.
Compensation Details by Service
The compensation plan is structured according to the type of damage and specific service usage.
For holders of gift certificates and coupons that expired during the service disruption period (June 9-13), the validity period will be extended until June 20th.
Customers who experienced shipping delays for books, albums, or stationery during this period will receive 2,000 reward points.
Customers who purchased tickets but were unable to attend performances will receive a 120% refund of the ticket price.
For e-book services (Crema Club), members as of June 8th will have their subscription extended by 30 days. Customers whose subscription renewal was canceled will receive a 30-day free pass, and those who purchased rental items will have their rental period extended by 5 days.
YES24 plans to announce additional compensation measures for all 20 million of its members at a later date, acknowledging the week-long inconvenience and anxiety experienced by its customers.
Company's Apology and Future Security Measures
Kim Suk-hwan and Choi Se-ra, co-CEOs of YES24, stated, "We deeply apologize with bowed heads to all customers, partners, and everyone who suffered inconvenience due to this incident. We plan to re-examine our security system from the ground up."
They also outlined future security measures, emphasizing, "We will introduce an external security advisory board and expand our security budget to strengthen the platform's reliability and resilience, from system design to overall operation."
Impact on the Entertainment Industry
The incident has also impacted the entertainment industry.
ENHYPEN canceled an offline fan signing event celebrating their new album 'DESIRE: UNLEASH' because applications were disrupted by the YES24 system outage.
ATEEZ postponed the additional ticket sales schedule for their 'IN YOUR FANTASY IN INCHEON' world tour.
Actor Park Bo-gum also delayed the pre-sale authentication schedule for the Seoul performance of his 'BE WITH YOU' fan meeting tour.
