Actor Oh Young-soo is set to resume the appeal trial for his forced indecency case.
The Suwon District Court Criminal Appeals Division 6-1 (Presiding Judge Kwak Hyung-seop) will reopen the appeal hearing for Oh Young-soo on August 12th. Oh Young-soo was indicted on charges of forced indecency.
The appeal verdict was initially scheduled for May 3rd, but it was postponed to May 10th due to a conflict with the presidential election. It was then changed again to July 1st, and now it has been decided to resume arguments in August.
Allegations and Previous Proceedings
Oh Young-soo is accused of embracing Victim A on a walking path in August 2017, allegedly saying, "Let me give you a hug." He is also charged with kissing A's cheek in front of her residence in September of that year.
Victim A filed a complaint with the police in December 2021, but a decision of non-indictment was initially made. A then filed an appeal, and the prosecution reopened the investigation, leading to Oh Young-soo's indictment without detention in 2022.
Oh Young-soo has consistently denied the charges, stating that while it is true he walked on the path and visited her residence, he denies the allegations. However, in March of last year, the first-instance court found him guilty, sentencing him to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
The court stated at the time, "The victim's statements are consistent and appear to be testimony that could not be made without direct experience. Her diary entries and counseling records from a counseling center corroborate this."
In his final statement during the first trial, Oh Young-soo expressed, "At this age, I am ashamed to stand in court," adding, "Even now, I believe that nothing in my words or actions at the time could be considered indecency."
Both the prosecution and Oh Young-soo appealed the first-instance verdict. Witness questioning is expected to take place during the next appeal hearing.
'Squid Game' Fame
Meanwhile, Oh Young-soo is a star of the Netflix series 'Squid Game,' where he played the role of Oh Il-nam, the game's designer, earning widespread affection as the 'Gganbu Grandpa.'
In January 2022, Oh Young-soo also won the Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series award at the Golden Globe Awards for 'Squid Game,' marking the first time a Korean actor achieved this honor.
