Actor Lee Jae-ryong (62) appeared for police questioning on Tuesday, four days after being involved in a driving under the influence (DUI) accident.
Lee arrived at the Seoul Gangnam Police Station at 2:00 PM on the 10th to face charges of DUI and failing to take measures after an accident (hit-and-run). Although the questioning was originally scheduled for 3:00 PM, Lee arrived an hour early to meet with investigators.
The session lasted approximately four hours. Dressed in a black suit, Lee addressed the press upon leaving. "I am truly sorry for causing concern to so many people through my wrongful actions," he stated. He added, "I have told the truth to the authorities and will faithfully comply with all future legal proceedings," before bowing deeply to the gathered reporters.
Lee admitted to the DUI charges during the encounter. When asked if he acknowledged the allegations, he replied, "I admitted to it shortly after [the incident]." However, regarding his reasons for fleeing the scene, he remained brief: "I did not realize [an accident had occurred]. I will speak on that later."
The incident took place on August 6 at approximately 11:03 PM at the Cheongdam Station intersection. Lee’s vehicle reportedly surged toward the median strip, crashing through more than 10 meters of guardrail before he fled the scene. He was apprehended by police three hours later at a friend’s residence.
At the time of his arrest, his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was at a level warranting license suspension (0.03% or higher). While Lee initially denied the charges during the preliminary investigation, he admitted through his lawyer the following day to consuming "four shots of soju."
Footage obtained by Dispatch reveals that Lee failed to take any post-accident measures, leaving guardrail debris scattered across the road.
This is not Lee’s first alcohol-related offense. In 2003, his driver’s license was revoked for a DUI. In 2019, he faced public scrutiny for damaging a bowling alley signboard while intoxicated. https://www.dispatch.co.kr/2339868
