Director Yeon Sang-ho’s high-concept thriller Swarm (translated from Gunche) has officially crossed the coveted 4 million admissions milestone at the South Korean box office.

According to the Korean Film Council’s (KOFIC) integrated ticketing network, Swarm amassed a cumulative total of 4,000,131 admissions as of 5:12 PM KST on June 3.

In doing so, the film shattered the record for the fastest movie to reach the 4 million mark among all releases this year. Swarm conquered the milestone on its 14th day in theaters—surpassing the previous record held by the period blockbuster The Man Who Lives with the King, which crossed the same threshold on its 15th day.

Swarm is an intense zombie thriller that unfolds within a heavily quarantined building where a mysterious outbreak of mass infection triggers chaos. The narrative has captivated audiences by introducing a unique premise centered around "collective intelligence" and "forced evolution" within the infected host.

The film initially ignited international buzz following its official selection for the Midnight Screening section at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. Following its world premiere on the Croisette, it garnered critical acclaim for its claustrophobic tension and philosophical sci-fi undertones.

The milestone marks a phenomenal winning streak for its distributor, Showbox, which has delivered consecutive back-to-back box-office juggernauts this year, including The Man Who Lives with the King and the horror thriller Salmokji. Swarm easily cruised past its financial break-even point of 3 million admissions early in its theatrical run.

Even with fresh competition entering the market, Swarm shows no signs of slowing down, holding the No. 1 spot in real-time ticket reservations with a commanding 31.8% booking rate as of 7:00 PM KST on June 3. The newly released star-studded comedy Wild Thing, which debuted today, follows in second place at 21.2%.
